Dear Commando Community,

I am extremely excited to serve as your principal. I realize that the challenge is great; however, it is one that I am prepared to take on with your support. First, I would like to recognize my mentor and predecessor, Ms. Kenyatta Stansberry, the new Deputy Officer of Transition School, for all of her support and unselfish spirit.

To introduce my background, I have enjoyed 19 amazing years with Chicago Public School students, serving in the following roles: ESP (principal clerk, payroll clerk, and office manager), mathematics teacher, department chair, chief dean, and assistant principal. I believe that my experiences, as well as my education from National Louis University (Certificate of Advance Studies - Educational Leadership and Master of Curriculum and Instruction) and Chicago State University (Bachelors of Science - Mathematics), have prepared me for the many challenges that educators face daily. In my interactions with our students have given me the passion to continue to “teach”. As an educator, I take every opportunity to continue to grow and develop. In 2006-08, I attended Yale University National Teacher Institute and developed a curriculum unit entitled Keeping the Meaning in Mathematics: The Craft of Word Problems. In addition, for approximately three years, I served on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Publication Standing Committee as a referee where I wrote reviews for manuscripts submitted for publication. As a 2006 DRIVE (Delivering Results through Innovative and Visionary Education) winner, I served on the CEO Teacher Leadership Council where I provided input and feedback on CPS educational issues and assisted in improving the teacher mentoring program. I know for a fact that teachers make a tremendous impact on their students. There was a teacher that drastically changed my life. The notion that our work affects a child's life guides my daily work and pushes me to be the best educator I can possibly be. It is vital for our society that all students receive a quality education in order to have a quality life, and I am blessed to be part of that.

My goal for Marshall is driven from the vision that we as a community created: to ensure that all students are prepared to be productive citizens in our global society. And with the continued support of our LSC, parents and teachers, we have worked extremely hard to support our mission that I believe in whole-heartily: to provide all students with a quality education, including effective communication as well as critical thinking and relationship building skills.

Please know the open door policy still exist. I look forward to continue to work with you!

Educationally Yours,

Angel Johnson
Principal
